NDTV has joined the crowd

with 5 comments

NDTV was always better than the rest of the news media, until recently, but now as a part of commercialization perhaps, has joined the crowd. I can recall atleast two instances today while watching the Mumbai attacks coverage, where I really cursed NDTV and switched to Times Now.

They were showing the scenes of rescuees coming out of Oberoi and the media people trying desperately to get a word out of them. Immediately, the correspondent communicates by the phone and says “we tried to chase down the rescued people (a tone of confidence), however they were not willing to talk us (a tone of complaining) …”

Then they carried out a statement by an army chief in which he refused to give the count of casualties in the army, for obvious reasons of maintaining the morale. However, this channel reports “NSG casualty count unestimable…”

Similar thing had happened on Times Now, but the news anchor Arnab  politely advised restrain to the correspondent and the camera man. Times Now, today is the most responsible news channel (still they could improve) among the lot. I never ever switched to Aaj Tak or India TV who are glorifying the terrorist by carrying out his interview.

  1. I agree, Times Now has been more restrained……did not watch NDTV, but did you catch Rajdeep Sardesai physically herding a tired (Japanese?) gentleman towards the camera? This Japanese man who was one those to come out of the Taj yesterday. He told some crews he was tired and would not like to speak any more, and was leaving when Rajdeep pulled his little stunt.

    Cheers,

  2. well.. i think you are totally mistakened.. i had quite a laugh when i read your comment that times now is the most responsible channel today. its the most sensational english news channel today. i cant stand arnab shouting n yelling at the guests. it runs breaking news all day, everyday. never was news broken so frequently..
ndtv is still the most respected n trusted news source. it does happen so during live reporting that the tone is wrong or inappropriate , but ndtv delivers credible news most of the time..

  3. I agree with you completely. This is not the first time I have felt absolutely infuriated with NDTV. Likes of Barkha Dutt and Rajdeep are a shame on journalistic credibilities and professionalism…oversensationjalisation and dramatisation seems to be there forte…here is an article tht might interest you…

  4. NDTV used to be respectable earlier. But now that’s not the case anymore. I don’t say that Times Now or IBN CNN are any better. Even news channels are driven by TRPs. A sensational event like the Mumbai blasts – would make every other news channel have viewers tune into their own channel. They would stop at nothing – including getting a sound byte from a tired person who has just escaped the jaws of death and is looking at something to cool him/her down.

The fourth estate needs to take a lot of flak for the way they went about the handling of Mumbai incident. They seriously need to relook at the whole issue of media ethics and what they can do to regulate themselves.

A movie like Mumbai Meri Jaan – very ably shows the poignancy of the situation and the totally insensitive manner in which the media goes about its job of gathering sound bytes and increasing the TRP count.

  5. Heres what I wrote to NDTV today ..

I have been a longtime viewer of NDTV in the US and whats prompted me to write today is what I believe the pinnacle of my disbelief — disbelief at your coverage of attack on SL cricketers in Pak today. Just dry information …

Whats gone wrong with NDTV – wheres the cutting edge jounarlism, where are the panels and discussions and the debates [just the weekly THE BIG FIGHT is not enough], whats with always toeing the politically_correct lines?

You guys are the FOURTH pillar of the Indian democracy [besides the non functional legislature and executive and the excruciatingly slow judiciary] and you are busy talking about Slumdog! I havent seen any fantastic piece of investigation on
    1. how we are better now after 26/11. How and what has changed in our security structure? Go question the government, the coast guard, the navy. If you wont, who will? It is your MORAL duty.
    2. Is Maharashtra police any better today than it was before? Put Mr. Chavan on the spot.
    3. Have our Bangalores and Hyderabads learny any lessons?
    4. Where are the Martyrs’ families today? Give them coverage so we dont forget!
    5. I can go on and on ….. about so many other issues — the law and order in our states, judiciary, mis-governance …..

Have you seen TIMES NOW lately? Some times over_the_top, but more often that not incisive coverage, excellent debates, nimble at assembling panelists, provocative discussions …..

Wheres Prannoy? I grew up seeing and listening to him ..
Why does Barkha portray herself as some elitist intellectual?
