Masterstroke by India
Many fingers pointed at the PM for sacrificing the interests of the country while approaching the NSG towards a nuclear deal with the US. As I wrote in my previous post, it was just a step to be taken in a direction, to be able to decide our own direction for the future.
Post NSG, India effectively doesn’t need a deal with the US, though any such deal can’t harm much now. India has signed a more liberal deal with France. It was expected. The deal with France came through smoothly with terms not restricting even the reprocessing of the spent fuel. A similar deal with Russia is in the pipeline.
What does this mean now? India has options! All the fears that were raised all this time can now be safely laid to rest. There was no denying that India needs energy, and nuclear energy is the only logical option. But, with India’s own aspirations for becoming a nuclear power have hindered the progress of civilian nuclear technology flowing into India. Now, that is past.
I would say India just used US for its own advantage. Now we don’t need them. I wonder what the leftists might be thinking now. Maybe extend a wholehearted support to the government. Maybe not!
